Moving Checklist
1 Month Before Moving Day:
Sort and declutter: Decide what to keep, donate, sell, or throw away. Less to move means lower costs and less effort.
Create an inventory: Make a list of all the items you'll be moving, especially valuable or fragile items.
Plan your packing supplies: You’ll need a variety of box sizes—small boxes for heavy items like books, medium boxes for household items, and large boxes for light, bulky items like bedding. Don’t forget specialty boxes for dishes, clothing, and electronics. You can find boxes at local home improvement stores or online. However, Box Pack N Move also offers high-quality moving boxes and packing supplies. Contact us for a free quote on boxes to meet your moving needs.
Book your moving company: Confirm dates and details with the movers. Get a written estimate and any additional services agreed upon.
Plan for moving insurance: Consider purchasing extra insurance coverage for valuable items.
2-3 Weeks Before Moving Day:
Notify important parties: Inform utility companies (electric, gas, water, internet) of your move-out/move-in dates. Update your address with:
Postal service
Banks/financial institutions
Insurance providers
Subscriptions and memberships
Employer
Start packing non-essential items: Begin with things you won’t need until after the move, such as seasonal clothing, décor, books, etc.
Label your boxes: Clearly mark each box with its contents and which room it belongs in at the new place.
Create a "moving essentials" box: This should include important documents, medications, chargers, snacks, and personal items you'll need on moving day or immediately afterward.
1 Week Before Moving Day:
Confirm with the movers: Reconfirm your moving date, time, and any special requirements.
Prepare large appliances: Defrost the fridge/freezer, drain the washing machine, and disconnect appliances.
Disassemble furniture: Take apart any large furniture items that can be disassembled to save time on moving day.
Set up utilities for the new home: Ensure electricity, water, gas, internet, and other essential services are activated at your new address.
2-3 Days Before Moving Day:
Pack a bag of essentials: Include clothes, toiletries, electronics, and anything else you'll need during the first few days in your new home.
Finish packing: Ensure everything is packed except for essentials you need on moving day.
Take pictures of electronics: Photograph how your electronics are connected to make reassembly easier.
Clean your current home: Clean and prepare your home for the next occupants or to meet any rental move-out requirements.
Day Before Moving Day:
Confirm arrangements: Double-check with your moving company about timing and any final details.
Pack valuables separately: Keep jewelry, important documents, and small valuables with you, not with the movers.
Charge your phone: Ensure your phone is fully charged for moving day.
Moving Day:
Meet the movers: Be present when the movers arrive to guide them and answer any questions.
Do a final walkthrough: Check every room, closet, and storage area to ensure nothing is left behind.
Take meter readings: Take photos of gas, water, and electricity meters at both your old and new home for record-keeping.
Supervise loading: Ensure that fragile items and furniture are handled properly.
Clean as you go: After movers empty each room, do a final clean-up if necessary.
Double-check the truck: Once everything is loaded, do a final walk-around to make sure nothing is left behind.
At the New Home:
Unpack essentials first: Start with the essentials box, so you can function immediately upon arrival.
Check for damages: Inspect your furniture and belongings for any damage before the movers leave.
Direct movers: Guide movers to place boxes and furniture in the appropriate rooms.
Set up key utilities: Make sure basics like the fridge, stove, and internet are working.
Relax and enjoy your new home!
